We take a moment with Anna McCooe, Lifestyle Editor at Marie Claire magazine, to find out her best tips for styling our new season colour, carbon, in the home.

Where I’m seeing the carbon trend:

anniversary gifts for couples

Carbon and metal have been trendingin fashion and lifestyle for a while. I’ve always loved raw cast iron, or carbon-coloured furniturecustom wedding gifts, framework and hardware. The colour is at its best on a tactile surface, which is why I’m currently loving carbon-coloured dinnerware and platters in organic shapes and textural finishes, like the Joni Terrazzo Platter. The cool, dark colour makes food so very insta-worthy.

My advice for styling dark neutrals:

Don’t be afraid of the dark. In a quiet nook filled with books and a comfy armchair, dark neutrals create a mood perfect to unwind in. These tones recede, so use them as a subtle backdrop, then introduce life with lashings of greenery. I love fresh flowers or foliage contrasted withthe matte ceramic of the Mellie Flower Pot. The dark tone of this pot looks perfect paired with fabrics and finishes that catch the light, such as a velvetEmington Cushionor hammeredbrass platter.

How I pair carbon with colour:

I prefer carbon teamed with pops of white, brass and natural materials such as timber. Then, for a hint of colour, I’m loving blush and terracotta. Adark carbon base like theNashe Quilt Coverlooks amazing softened up with tones of pale grey and blush pink. Think atextured grey Doveton Throw paired with the Alena Linen Cushion and a pink Tribecca Tasseled Cushion to highlight.

Whygrey so enduring and popular:

Everything seems so much cooler against a grey backdrop. Colours pop, greenery looks more lush, white feels crisper and art has more impact. A classic black and white photographic print or a graphic illustration like the Two Feathers Wall Art will always look fresh in the home.

My tips for layering with texture:

Keep your styling tonal and let the textures do the talking. Create a relaxed look on the lounge with softly rumpled Alena Linen Throwsand cushions, or opt for all out luxury with a pile of cosy, winter weight accessories in contrasting fabrics. A fluffy Mongolian lambswool cushion, luxurious faux furEuro and a super soft Linderbrook Cashmere Throwmake for a richly textured look.

How I mastered the gender neutral interior:

Don’t be afraid to be too feminine. Or masculine for that matter. First, do you, then style for him or her. A room has more energy when styles clash unexpectedly. Your space should represent the people who inhabit it. If the style mix is too much, calm it down with soft neutrals in natural fibres like cotton or linen. A relaxed Abbotson Linen Quilt Cover is the perfect base to build your gender neutral room. Simply add a contrast linen sheet, tasseledfeature cushionand a textured throw totruly make it your own.

Inspiration can be elusive at times and strike like lightning at others. When planning a quilting project, it is sometimes colors that inspire me or patterns that “jump out” from everyday surroundings.
